The drop-off at RMC is located next to the ice machine at the gas dock building.

BIGGER and Better: Boat Loads of Food – 2011

Brunswick Boat Works, Wawenock Sail and Power Squadron and the Portland Head Sail and Power Squadron proudly announce the commencement of our annual Boat Loads of Food, food drive.

This year, with the addition of the Portland Head Sail and Power Squadron, we have increased the number of participating collection locations from 13 to 22!

Monday, September 6th, 2011, Labor Day, Boat Loads of Food, food drive, officially begins its mission of collecting non-perishable food from boaters as they haul their boats for the winter. More people are helping so more can be helped. Beginning September 6th to Columbus Day, October 10th, collection containers are in place and we are accepting food donations for the Good Shepherd Food Bank. Good Shepherd is the primary distributor for all Food Banks in the Mid Coast region. During the months of September and October, food donations are near the lowest in the year. The purpose of our Boat Loads of Food, food drive, is to help feed those in need at a time when food is not so readily accessible.

Mary and Michael Kunhardt, owners of Brunswick Boat Works, organized “Boat Loads of Food “in 2009, a drive that collected 215 pounds of nonperishable food for the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program. NOW, IN ITS THIRD, consecutive year, the Wawenock Sail and Power Squadron, is joined by the Portland Head Sail and Power Squadron, with the hope of reaching our goal of 1000 pounds of non-perishable food. Collection tubs/boxes have been placed at these Participating Businesses:

Brunswick Boat Works * Paul’s Marina * Dolphin Marine * Great Island Boat Yard * Orr’s-Bailey Yacht Club * Ocean Point Marina * Robinhood Marine Center * Strouts Point Wharf* Brewers is South Freeport * Boothbay Harbor Marina * Carousel Marina *Birch Island Landing * Southport Marina * Aspasia Marine * Yankee Marina * Yarmouth Boatyard * Royal River Marina * Centerboard Yacht Club * Sunset Marina * Handy Boat Services * and Mere Point Community. THREE TIMES THE NUMBER OF LOCATIONS, this year!

As boats are hauled from their mooring, boaters can place their non-perishable food items in provided and well marked containers. These containers are usually placed at an upper dock, office or yacht club house, for easy, visible access. No lugging uneaten cans or boxes of food; rather than taking these supplies home, put them in the Boat Loads of Food containers. Good Shepherd Food Bank will receive this food. It is the primary facility in the Mid-coast area to receive and distribute food to outlying food banks. Please help us collect 1000 lbs of food so we can double last year’s efforts.

For more information call: Mary Kunhardt: 837-9503 kunhardt@gwi.net
